How to Read a Surf Forecast

A surf forecast looks like a wall of numbers: heights, seconds, arrows, times, percentages. Most people find the largest wave-height figure, decide it looks good or bad, and close the tab. That single number is the worst way to read a forecast. It discards almost everything that decides whether you get a session worth remembering.

A forecast is five layers stacked on top of each other: swell, wind, tide, timing, and your own local knowledge. No layer means much alone. Together they turn a grid of numbers into a picture of the ocean, two, three, even five days out. This guide explains each layer in the order you read it. Then it shows you how to combine them into one confident call.

Start with swell, and read period first

Swell is the foundation. It decides whether there are waves at all. Swell comes in three parts, and you must always read them together: height, period, and direction.

The instinct is to read height first. Resist it. Period — the gap in seconds between passing waves — is the most important number on the whole forecast. Period tells you how organized and powerful the swell is:

  • Under 8 s — local wind chop. Weak and disorganized. Usually not worth it.

  • 8–11 s — mid-period swell. Surfable and common, but softer.

  • 12–15 s — solid groundswell. Clean, powerful, well-spaced lines.

  • 16 s and up — long-period groundswell from a distant storm. Powerful and pulsing.

Height only means something after you know the period. A 1.5 m swell at 16 seconds can throw up powerful, overhead waves, because so much of its energy is below the surface. The same 1.5 m at 7 seconds gives a gutless, sloppy day. Read the period, then read the height in that context.

Direction is the last part. It is the direction that the swell travels from. Direction tells you if that energy can reach your spot, or if a headland, an island, or the angle of the coast blocks it. Every break has a window of directions that it works in.

Then the wind, because it decides how good it is

Swell tells you that there are waves. Wind decides whether they are worth surfing. A perfect long-period swell with a strong onshore wind can be completely unsurfable. A modest swell with a light offshore wind can give a magic session. This is why you read wind second, and never last.

There are three cases. The way your beach faces defines all three:

  • Offshore (it blows from the land out to sea) holds the waves up, grooms the surface glassy, and lets them break with shape. This is what you want, and light to moderate is ideal.

  • Onshore (it blows from the sea onto the land) breaks the waves early and crumbles them into mush. This is the most common reason that a good forecast disappoints in person.

  • Cross-shore is between the two. It adds texture and bump.

This is the point that confuses most people: the same wind is offshore at one beach and onshore at another. A west wind grooms an east-facing spot clean, and it blows out a west-facing spot on the same day. This is why local surfers move between coastlines as the wind turns. Most forecasts give wind as a direction and a strength, hour by hour. Do not read the daily average. Read the window. A spot that is glassy and offshore at 7am is often blown out and onshore by 1pm.

Then the tide, which turns spots on and off

Surfers forget the tide layer. It is the reason that two identical swells give completely different surf at the same beach on the same day.

As the tide rises and falls, the depth of the water over a reef, a sandbar, or a point changes. The way the wave breaks changes with it. Some spots only fire on a pushing mid-tide. Others need a dead low tide, or a full high tide, and go fat and lifeless at every other stage. There is no universal rule, and that is the point: tide is where local knowledge replaces the forecast.

A forecast gives you the tide times and heights. It cannot tell you which stage suits your spot. You learn that when you surf the spot, or when you ask someone who has surfed it. Until you know, treat the tide as the variable that explains one thing. It explains why a spot that fired yesterday is flat today at the same swell.

Timing: read the window, not the day

A daily forecast summary hides the most important thing: when, exactly, everything comes together. Swell builds and fades over hours. Wind turns through the day. Tide moves on its own clock. The magic window is the hour or two when all three overlap in your favor.

On many coastlines that window is dawn, and this is not superstition. Overnight, the land is cool and the air is calm or gently offshore. As the sun heats the land, a sea breeze builds and turns the wind onshore through the afternoon. The practical result is this: clean at dawn, blown out by midday. It does not happen everywhere or every day, but "surf early" is reliable advice on most coasts.

So read a forecast hour by hour and look for the overlap: groundswell in the water, wind still offshore, tide at the right stage. That intersection is your session. The headline number for the day is not.

How to put the layers together

A single forecast line can read:

1.6 m @ 14 s from the SW, light offshore, mid-tide pushing, 7am

Read it in order and it tells a story:

  1. Period — 14 s. A proper groundswell, clean and organized. Good.

  2. Direction — from the SW. Compare it to your spot's window. If the spot is open to the south-west, the swell arrives at full force. If a headland blocks it, expect less.

  3. Height — 1.6 m. With a 14-second period and a favorable angle, this is solid, powerful surf. It is likely overhead where the swell focuses well.

  4. Wind — light offshore. It grooms the faces clean. This is the go signal.

  5. Tide — mid, pushing. If your spot likes a pushing mid-tide, everything agrees.

  6. Timing — 7am. This is before the sea breeze arrives. Get there early.

Change one value and the whole call changes. Drop the period to 8 seconds and the same 1.6 m goes soft. Turn the wind onshore and the spot blows out. Move the tide to dead low at a spot that needs height, and the waves go fat and close out. The skill is never to read one layer. The skill is to read how the layers stack.

A checklist for every session

Before you commit to a paddle-out, read these six questions in order:

  1. Period — Is this groundswell (12 s and more) or wind chop (under 8 s)?

  2. Direction — Does the swell angle match your spot's window?

  3. Height — How much energy is there, read in context of the period?

  4. Wind — Is it offshore and clean, or onshore and blown out, for the way this beach faces?

  5. Tide — Is the spot at a stage of tide that suits it?

  6. Timing — When in the day do all five overlap?

Read those six together and a forecast stops being a wall of numbers. It becomes a picture of the ocean, days out. You start to show up on the good days instead of guessing.

That is the whole point of a forecast. It does not tell you a wave height. It tells you when to paddle out.
