Ask anyone who reads a forecast and they'll tell you the same rule: the bigger the period, the better the surf. And most of the time they're right — period is the single most useful number on a forecast, and a jump from 8 to 14 seconds is almost always an upgrade.
But the rule has an edge to it. Push far enough and it flips. A 16-second swell can arrive smaller than forecast, close out in one gutless wall, and empty the lineup by mid-morning, while a 12-second swell down the coast peels off perfect, makeable sets all day. "More period is always better" is a good beginner rule and a bad expert one. This post is about the gap between them — what period really measures, and why more of it eventually stops helping.
What period actually measures
Swell period is the gap, in seconds, between two passing waves. Stand on a pier, watch one crest go by, count until the next one arrives — that count is the period. It sounds trivial. It is the most information-dense number on the whole forecast.
Period is a proxy for energy and organisation. Waves are made by wind blowing over open ocean. The longer and harder the wind blows over a bigger stretch of water, the longer the period of the swell it generates. So period quietly tells you the story of the storm that made the waves:
Under 8 s — local wind chop. The wind that made it is still nearby, or just left. Weak, short-lived, disorganised.
8–12 s — mid-period swell. A real system, but close, or moderate. Surfable and common.
13–15 s — clean groundswell from an organised storm well offshore.
16 s and up — long-range groundswell from a powerful distant storm, sometimes thousands of kilometres away.
The key physical fact hiding under those numbers: longer-period waves carry their energy deeper below the surface. A short-period wave is a shallow ripple of energy. A long-period wave is a deep column of it. That's why period, not height, decides how powerful a wave feels — and it's also the root of everything that follows, including why 16 seconds can be too much of a good thing.

Why more period usually wins
Before the exception, be clear on the rule, because it holds far more often than not.
A long-period swell has travelled a long way from its storm, and that journey sorts it. Waves of different speeds fan out and separate, so what reaches you is clean, evenly spaced, and marching from a consistent direction. That's the "corduroy to the horizon" look. It has three concrete advantages:
It stands up taller than its number. Because the energy runs deep, a long-period swell "feels the bottom" far out and jacks up hard when it hits the shallows. A 1.2 m reading at 16 s can break well overhead. The same 1.2 m at 8 s barely stands up. (This is exactly why you read period before height.)
It's powerful. That deep energy means push, hold, and a wave with drive down the line.
It's organised. Even spacing, consistent direction, clean faces.
So when someone sees 16 seconds on the forecast and gets excited, they're not wrong. They're playing the odds correctly. The exception below doesn't cancel this — it just explains why the odds aren't a certainty.
The catch: energy has to fit the spot
Here's the turn. All that deep energy is only a gift if your spot can convert it into a rideable wave. Long-period swell doesn't just arrive bigger — it arrives differently, and several of those differences can work against you.
It jacks up too hard and closes out. The same trait that makes long-period swell powerful — energy hitting the shallows all at once — can make it break top to bottom across a whole sandbar with no shoulder to escape onto. Many beach breaks that are fun and peeling at 11 seconds turn into unmakeable closeout walls at 16. The wave has plenty of power and nowhere to go.
It refracts and wraps — and loses height doing it. Long-period swell bends around headlands, reefs, and into bays far more than short-period swell. That's sometimes the whole point: it's how a south swell wraps into a spot that "faces" the wrong way. But wrapping spends energy. A 16 s swell that has to bend 90 degrees into your bay can arrive dramatically smaller than the open-coast reading — often smaller than a 12 s swell that meets the same beach head-on and doesn't have to bend at all.
It over-shadows. Because it wraps so strongly and comes so straight, a long-period swell pointed slightly wrong can march right past a headland and never enter your window, while a shorter-period swell from a nearby storm — more spread out in direction — sneaks energy in from several angles at once.
It comes in long lulls. Long-period sets are spaced far apart. Fewer waves per hour, longer flat spells between sets, a more crowded scramble for each one. A 12 s swell delivers more waves, more often — frequently the more fun session even when it's technically less powerful.
So when does 12 beat 16?
Put those together and the picture is concrete. A 12-second swell out-surfs a 16-second one when:
Your spot closes out on too much power. Mellow beach breaks and gutless sandbars often want the softer, more forgiving push of a mid-period swell. 16 s just detonates.
The long-period swell has to wrap a long way to reach you, bleeding off height, while the 12 s swell hits the beach square and full-strength.
The 16 s swell is pointed a few degrees outside your window and slides past, while the more directionally spread 12 s swell still lights up your bank.
You want waves, not a wave. More frequent sets, shorter lulls, a session instead of a staring contest with the horizon.
You're still learning. A beginner is far better served by the softer, more frequent, more makeable faces of a mid-period swell than by powerful long-period closeouts.
None of this makes 16 seconds "bad." It makes period a relationship between the swell and your spot, not a score you read off in isolation. The right question is never "how many seconds?" It's "how many seconds, into what?"
Reading it on the forecast
You'll rarely see period alone — it comes bundled with height and direction, and you have to read all three together, plus what you know about your break.
Spot A: 1.3 m @ 16 s from the S — but your beach faces west and the swell must wrap around a big headland to get in.
Spot B: 1.5 m @ 12 s from the WSW — arriving straight into the same beach.
The instinct is to chase the 16-second line. But read it properly: that south swell has to bend a long way to reach a west-facing beach, so it'll arrive smaller and weaker than 1.3 m suggests, and only for the few spots angled to catch the wrap. The 12-second WSW swell meets the beach head-on at nearly full strength, with more frequent sets. On this coast, on this day, 12 beats 16 — and only reading period against direction and your spot tells you so.
Flip the details — an exposed reef that thrives on power, a south-facing point built to catch that exact wrap — and 16 wins in a landslide. That's the point. The number doesn't change; what it's pointed at does.
A checklist for reading period
Read period first, height second. Period tells you the quality and power; height only means something in its context.
Translate the number — under 8 s chop, 8–12 s mid-period, 13 s+ groundswell — but treat the bands as a start, not a verdict.
Ask what the energy has to do to reach you. Does the swell hit your beach square, or wrap a long way in and lose height doing it?
Match power to your spot. Does this break want the deep punch of long-period swell, or does it close out and prefer a softer mid-period push?
Weigh frequency. More period means fewer, bigger, further-apart sets. More waves can beat bigger waves for the session you actually want.
Then decide — the winner is the swell that fits your spot, not the one with the highest second-count.
The bottom line
Period measures energy and organisation — the fingerprint of the storm that made the swell — and it matters more than height because long-period energy runs deep and stands up tall.
More period usually wins, and playing that rule is a good default.
But energy has to fit the spot. Long-period swell can close out, wrap and lose height, shadow past your window, and come in long lulls.
12 can beat 16 when your break closes out on too much power, when the long swell has to wrap in and weaken, when it's angled just outside your window, or when you simply want more waves.
The real skill isn't chasing the biggest number. It's reading period against direction, your spot, and the day — which is the same skill behind reading the whole forecast and sorting primary from secondary swell.
